Military veterans honored in Guilderland

GUILDERLAND — For the sixth year, Guilderland is honoring veterans of the armed forces with its Hometown Heroes banner program.

A dedication ceremony, open to the public, will be held on Friday, June 9, at 10 a.m. at Tawasentha Park off of Route 146.

This year, eight new banners were sponsored by the American Legion, the Fort Hunter Fire Department, and several Guilderland families. The town will also display banners from prior years.

Information, biographies, and a map of banner locations will be available on the town of Guilderland website.

“We are honored to ‘take up the mantle’ and assume the leadership role of the banner program,” said Colin J. Gallup, director of Guilderland’s Parks and Recreation Department, in a release from the town.

“The faces and names of the honorees have become part of the fabric of the park,” Gallup went on. “We need to continue our awareness, and hear the stories of those who served so we never forget their sacrifice.

“We encourage all residents and non-residents to get outside and enjoy a walk in the park, pause and read each banner, think of our rich history, service, and gratitude. The town is committed to keeping such a valued program going to help show the community's gratitude.”
