The Surface Transportation Board on Thursday signed off on CSX’s acquisition of Pan Am Railways, paving the way for work to begin on 15.5 miles of railroad track that runs through the heart of Altamont and Voorheesville. 

Robert C. Lawrence and his wife, Carol Ann, were kayaking on an Adirondack lake, watching some loons, when she asked him how the mountain looming over them, Blue Mountain, got its name.

Lawrence thought he’d buy a book on Adirondack place names at the Blue Mountain Museum to answer the question. But there was no such book.

The Veterans and Community Housing Coalition is striving to build medium-term housing for homeless female veterans who, on top of dealing with the usual stresses of transitioning into civilian life, risk being separated from their children because traditional support housing doesn’t usually accommodate families.

Some experts believe that part of the reason the current BA.2 uptick isn’t as severe as the drastic Omicron surge in January is because so many people were infected then that, vaccinated or not, they have immunity. 

Joan M. Healey died surrounded by her loving husband and her two sons on Monday, April 11, 2022. She was 58.

“Joan was a loving mother and devoted wife and a proud grandmother,” her family wrote in a tribute. “She truly loved her family.”

Yvonne S. Lustenhouwer, a skilled gardener and crafter, died peacefully surrounded by the love of her family on Thursday, April 7, 2022. She was 74. 

“Yvonne was loved by all who knew her, and she will be greatly missed,” her family wrote in a tribute.

GUILDERLAND — “You go fishing and there’s an infinite possibility for surprise,” says Guilderland angler John Rowen.

He’s fished trout streams in Rensselaer County that are no wider than a driveway and found 17-inch trout in them, “which is crazy,” he says with glee.

New York State has $34 million in federal funding awards for over 1,000 homes to become more energy efficient. The money is to reduce energy costs for low-income homeowners and renters.
