Assemblyman Christopher Tague, a Republican, was challenged unsuccessfully for his seat by Democrat Nicholas S. Chase, a young teacher who was making his first run for office.

Persisting in factual errors undermines our government. We can’t live with the facts and surmount them if we don’t accept them. There are no such things as “alternative facts.” Something is true or untrue — or perhaps unknown.

Eligible households can receive one regular benefit per season and could also be eligible for an emergency benefit if they are in danger of running out of heating fuel or having their utility service shut off.

Phillip G. Steck, the incumbent Democrat, and Alexandra M. Chase, a substitute teacher who grew up on a Delaware County farm, similarly prizes the agricultural economy, but differs from Tague on issues like abortion and gun control.  

One of the factors underlying the continued growth of sales-tax collections is high inflation, which increases the cost of purchases made and, therefore, the taxes collected on those purchases. However, the third quarter’s 8.3-percent inflation rate had a negative impact on local governments as well, reducing the amount that they can purchase with the same dollars.

ROCHESTER — Sara Gainer Haimowitz — born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania; raised in Altamont, New York; and a resident of the Rochester, New York area — died unexpectedly on Friday, Oct. 21, 2022. She was 39.
