The old Stewart's Shop in Altamont is demolished on Friday as the new shop, behind it, is open for business. The new shop stands on land that had been zoned residential, which the Altamont Village board changed to commercial so the current 2,700-square-foot store could be replaced by the new 3,340-square-foot shop. The chain has 340 locations in 31 counties across upstate New York and southern Vermont and has invested $150 million in shop construction over the last three years; Stewart's will have 19 new shops in 2020.
