Wires down: Guilderland Police closed off School Road in Guilderland Center from the firehouse to just past the entrance to the high school Thursday mid-morning after a car drove into a utility pole across from the school, splintering it, and lowering the live wires. Officer Damir Svraka said that it appeared the driver had been reaching for something — “a cigarette or something of that nature” — and had veered off the road.

On the scene: Chief John Joy, above, of the Guilderland Center Fire Department, said he anticipated that power would be out at the high school and several nearby homes for several hours Thursday after the car behind him, on the shoulder of School Road, hit and broke a utility pole. Neither of the two males in the car needed to be taken to the hospital. National Grid was also on the scene, making sure that power to the affected lines was shut down
