Sectional playoffs have begun and the Colonial Council Patriot Division champions, the Voorheesville Blackbirds, started the journey towards winning another sectional championship on Tuesday afternoon at home against Catskill. The Birds won, 9 to 0, in the Class B first-round sectional game, and play today at Ichabod Crane in the Quarterfinals at 4 p.m.

The Birds’ defense on Tuesday was dominant all game long, beginning from the mound, at left, as Voorheesville starting pitcher P.J. Parker. He went the distance, seven innings, giving up only one hit with six strikeouts and three walks.

Debating on fielding a grounder: Blackbirds’ second baseman, Brayden Esposito, takes the grounder as teammate Patrick Foley gets out of the way for Esposito to field and throw to Parker for the out.

In the seventh inning, after a Catskill player hit the ball, Voorheesville’s shortstop, John Moreau watches the ball go into his glove — it had popped out the first time — to record the out. His coach, Kyle Turski, playfully asked if the double catch would count for two outs.

The Blackbirds bats started slow but woke up fast. Notching a hit, Esposito got a hit in his last at bat, which resulted in an RBI in the bottom of the sixth. He went one for four with an RBI, scored a run, and had a stolen base.

High fives: Voorheesville’s John Moreau, left, congratulates Ryan Daly at home plate after Daly hits a two-run homerun in the bottom of the third. Daly went two for three with the two-run home run, two RBIs, a run scored, and a base stolen base.
