Photos: Eagles Win Sectionals, Send 4 To States

The Guilderland-Voorheesville and Bethlehem swimming teams made a splash in the Section 2 swimming and diving sectional championships at Shenendehowa High School last week. The Eagles won their first sectional championship since 2001, Guilderville finished sixth.

Hey there: Guilderville’s Hayden Heckler turns his head as he swims down his lane during his 500-yard heat. Heckler finished 8th on Friday then 7th on Saturday with a time of 5:13.42.

Good pace: Guilderville’s Colin Doney turns his head to the left for some air as he completes one of many laps in the 500-yard freestyle. Doney finished 23rd with a time of 5:47.45.

And go! Eagles’ Ian Savage leaps from the block as teammate Ewan Izzard touches the wall for the third leg in the 200-yard free relay. The relay team won on Friday then won on Saturday in the finals for a NYS qualifying time of 129.10.

Water everywhere: Eagles’ Ewan Izzard comes from under the water as he swims down his lane in the 100-yard backstroke. Izzard finished 2nd on Friday with a time of 58.54 seconds then finished 2nd on Saturday with a NYS qualifying time of 53.51 seconds.

Encased: Eagles’ Jacob Hershberg goes down the lane as water goes all around him in the 100-yard backstroke heat. Hershberg had the top time on Friday with a time of 53.13 seconds then won with a NYS qualifying time of 51.39 seconds and qualified for states.

Peekaboo: Eagles’ Alexander Zhang comes up from under the water as he swims the second lap of the 100-yard breaststroke. Zhang finished 12th with a time of 1:06.37 on Friday then on Saturday finished 12th with a time of 1:06.90.

Cutting the water: Guilderville’s Mark Shao starts to go back under the water after taking a breath of air in the 100-yard breaststroke. Shao finished 11th with a time of 1:05.31 on Friday then 1:03.37 on Saturday for a 9th place finish.

Popping up to states: Eagles’ Simba Jenga comes up from under as he swims the second lap of the 100-yard breaststroke. Jenga finished 7th on Friday with a time of 1:01.81 then finished 6th with a NYS qualifying time of 1:01.18 and qualified for states.
