Photos: Remembering a hero

Joseph E. Persico, United States Navy veteran of the Korean War, was honored on Jan. 5, at a ceremony hosted by Albany County. Persico served from 1952 to 1955, and later worked as a speechwriter for Governor Nelson A. Rockefeller and co-authored a book with Colin Powell. He served on the American Battle Monuments Commission and helped design the World War II Memorial on the Mall in Washington, DC.

United States Navy Korean War veteran Joseph Persico, who died in August, is honored at a ceremony on Jan. 5, where his brother, Richard Persico, left, was given the American flag that flew over the United States Capitol. Richard Persico’s wife, Charlene, also attended the ceremony, along with a Persico cousin, and retired newspaper editor and memoirist Harry Rosenfeld, right. The ceremony was hosted by Daniel P. McCoy, the Albany County executive; Paul Tonko, the 20th District congressman; and Charles Burkes, the director of the Albany County Veterans Bureau.

A veteran’s salute: Joseph Persico, who wrote speeches for Governor Nelson A. Rockefeller and co-authored a book with Colin Powell, is posthumously honored while Taps plays at a ceremony held for him on Monday. Persico, who had lived in Guilderland, also served on the American Battle Monuments Commission and served on the commission charged with the design and creation of the World War II Memorial on The Mall in Washington, D.C. Seven of his words — “Here we mark the price of freedom” — are inscribed on the memorial.
