ALTAMONT — Thelma I. Elgie, longtime resident of Altamont, died peacefully on Thursday, May 30, in Albany with her loving family by her side. She was 102.

Born in 1922, she was the daughter of the late George and Hattie Spawn Gade. She was the beloved wife of the late Augustus “Jim” Elgie Jr. who died in 1956.

“Thelma spent her childhood growing up on the Gade Farm in Guilderland,” her family wrote in a tribute. “A graduate of Altamont High School, Thelma spent her adult life in Altamont.

“Thelma and Jim married in 1947 and started their family living in the Fredendall Funeral Home as the owners. Following Jim’s death in 1956, Thelma continued being a homemaker for some time, later returning to work at Bender Laboratory and ultimately retiring from the Altamont Library.

“Thelma will be fondly remembered by her family as a caring and loving mother, grandmother, great-grandmother and great-great grandmother.”
