ALTAMONT — Richard G. Long, who is in the Transportation Hall of Fame, died peacefully on Friday, Oct. 6, 2023 at his Altamont home. He was 89.

He was born in Albany in 1934 to the late Kenneth and Mildred Long.

Edward Mead

EAST GREENBUSH — Edward “Ed” Mead, who served in the Navy and later ran a successful pool business, died on Wednesday, Oct. 4, at Evergreen Commons nursing home in East Greenbush.

He was born on July 26, 1941 and grew up in Voorheesville, the son of Harold “Coach” Mead and Norma (née Weidman) Mead.

Ann Christine (née Woodward) Gepfert, proud of her career with Niagara Mohawk, gathered friends wherever she went.

She died in Port St. Lucie, Florida on Thursday, Oct. 12, 2023, after an extended illness. She was 85.

Eric J. Johnson

SLINGERLANDS — “Eric, EJ, Big E, Bobo, Erico, Ebert, Ben, Uncle E, Uncle Ben — no matter what name you called him, Eric J. Johnson was a force of nature,” his family wrote in a tribute.

James Walter Smith

James Walter Smith was born March 28, 1937 in Manhattan at Knickerbocker Hospital to Austrian-born mother, Julia Wouk, and Preston A. Smith of Louisiana.

Norman Reynold Swanson

SLINGERLANDS — “Norman Reynold Swanson, Ph.D., passed peacefully into Eternal Life on Oct. 12, 2023, from complications of Parkinson’s disease,” his family wrote in a tribute. “He passed during the night while sleeping. His wife, Ellen, was at his side.” He was 89.

John Allen Schachne

GUILDERLAND — John Allen Schachne, who coached softball after retiring from General Electric Plastics, died on Tuesday, Sept. 26, 2023, after a long battle with multiple medical conditions. He was 75.

He was born on July 4th, 1948 to James and Sylvia Schachne in Washington, D.C.

Mary Louise Brennan

NEW SCOTLAND — Mary Louise “Mary Lou” Brennan, a compassionate caregiver, died peacefully on Friday, Sept. 29, 2023, at Our Lady of Mercy Life Center after a long illness. She was 81.

“She left on her next journey, surrounded by family and loving, compassionate caregivers,” her family wrote in a tribute.

EAST BERNE — “We are saddened to announce the passing of Robert ‘Bob’ Duncan, 76, of East Berne on September 27, 2023,” his family wrote in a tribute. “He lost his short battle with cancer surrounded by his loving family.

Donald George Knaggs

ALTAMONT — Donald George Knaggs, owner of Knaggs Brothers Trucking, died at his Altamont home on Wednesday, Oct. 4, 2023, after a battle with cancer. He was 69.

He was born in Schenectady on Dec. 16, 1953, the first of three children of the late Oscar and Joan Knaggs. He graduated from Guilderland High School.

GUILDERLAND — Harriet Hope Griffiths, a nurse and consummate caregiver, died on Saturday, Aug. 5, 2023, just 17 days shy of her 100th birthday.

Lois M. Klob

GREENVILLE — Lois M. Klob, her family wrote in a tribute, “left this world on Friday, Sept. 29, 2023 at 2:02 p.m. at home surrounded by her family.” She was 90.

She was born at home in Westerlo on Oct. 14, 1932 to the late Ward and Anna (née Vincent) Waldron.
