GUILDERLAND — John Allen Schachne, who coached softball after retiring from General Electric Plastics, died on Tuesday, Sept. 26, 2023, after a long battle with multiple medical conditions. He was 75.

He was born on July 4th, 1948 to James and Sylvia Schachne in Washington, D.C.

“John is retired from G.E. Plastics and New York State Higher Education,” his family wrote in a tribute.

“After retirement, John spent his time coaching and umpiring girls’ softball, was active in the St. Matthew’s Church, served on the Voorheesville School & Community Foundation, and Voorheesville Planning Committee, and most recently celebrated 10 years of part-time employment at New Comer Cremations & Funerals.

“He is a lifelong fan of the New York Giants and Baltimore Orioles and enjoyed sleepovers with his grandkids.”

John Allen Schachne is survived by his wife, Margherita Audino Schachne; sister, Suzanne Khanna; daughters, Elicia McMullen and Christina McClurken and her husband, Kevin; and grandchildren, Tyler, Zachary, Kendall, Jordan, and Casey.

He is also survived by his sister-in-law, Mackey Oppedisano; brother-in-law, Paul Audino and his wife, Pat; several nieces and nephews; and good friends, Richard Pape and Dave DiMoulpied.

His parents, James and Sylvia Schachne, Reverend James and Pat Kenyon, died before him, as did his father- and mother-in-law, Salvatore and Teresa Audino; and his brother-in-law, Fortunato Audino.

“We would like to thank the staff at St. Peter’s Hospital Oncology Department, especially Dr. Carey Ann Gray and nurse Tanya,” his family wrote. “We would also like to thank his medical team at Albany Medical Center and the staff of D5 for the care and compassion in his treatments.”

Calling hours will be Friday, Oct. 6, from 4 to 7 p.m. at New Comer Cremations & Funerals at 343 New Karner Road in Colonie. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Saturday Oct. 7, at 10:30 a.m. at St. Matthew’s Church at 25 Mountainview St. in Voorheesville with a reception to follow.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Voorheesville School & Community Foundation, Post Office Box 523, Voorheesville, NY 12186  and the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society.
