TROY — Shirley Marie Bowman Ward, who led Scouts, taught Sunday school, and ran a store with her husband, died on Monday, Aug. 28, 2017, at the Van Rensselaer Manor. She was 96.

BERNE — Joseph Anthony Mangano, a veteran and science teacher, developed learning centers for adult literacy that were adopted worldwide.

He died unexpectedly on Thursday, Aug. 24, 2017, at St. Peter’s Hospital. He was 95.

VOORHEESVILLE — Linda B. Hodges lived her life caring for others, whether it was family members she made quilts for, looking after her beloved dog, or volunteering with the seniors in the towns of Knox and Berne. She died on Tuesday, Aug. 22, 2017. She was 56.

ALTAMONT — Richard Spohr, a longtime Guilderland coach and teacher, “went home to be with his Lord” on Tuesday, Aug. 22, 2017, his family wrote in a tribute. He was 87.

“‘Coach’ was known and loved by many for his kind and gentle spirit; his joyful sense of humor; and his smile, which came so easily,” his family wrote.

GUILDERLAND — Joan Patricia (née Vincent) Niecey, a church-going woman who had a 43-year career with the Department of Motor Vehicles, died on Monday, Aug. 28, 2017, at Our Lady of Mercy in Guilderland where she had been a resident since June 2016.

GUILDERLAND — Mary Louisa Shear Brennan — wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, and volunteer — died on Wednesday morning, Aug. 16, 2017, after celebrating her 87th birthday and 64th wedding anniversary, and surrounded by her family for several days.

ALTAMONT — As a child, Todd Pulliam went to the one-room Bozenkill school, and at the end of his life he returned to build a home on family land on Bozenkill Road.

CLARKSVILLE — Gaile (née Wood) Van Wie of Clarksville was a nurturing mother who helped run her husband’s dairy farm. A beautiful woman, she was named the Albany County Dairy Queen.

EAST BERNE — Tammy Sue Ferriero is described by her family as “a loving, compassionate person who was so genuine and contagious, it would light up the moon.” Born in 1969, she died on Tuesday, Aug. 15, 2017.

EAST BERNE — Lee Storm Crosier, a mother and grandmother who worked as a waitress and in elder care, died on Monday, Aug. 14, 2017, at St. Peter’s Hospice Inn with her children by her side. She was 70.

“Lee loved to spend time with her grandchildren,” her family wrote in a tribute.

WESTERLO —  Bonnie Ruth Reister Duchow, a retired educator, died on Wednesday, Aug. 9, 2017, in Dallas, Texas, where she had lived with her son and family for the last two years. She was 86.

BERNE — Lee Ann Conners of Berne, whose life centered around children, died on Tuesday, Aug. 1, 2017 at St. Peter’s Hospice Inn in Albany. She was 82.

Harvey A. Swart, a hard worker who loved to share good jokes, died peacefully at his home on Thursday, June 8, 2017. He was a longtime resident of Frostproof, Florida after he and his wife retired there from Schenectady. He was 92.

VOORHEESVILLE — William M. Gipp Jr., who was known to his friends and family as Bill, was remembered this week as “stern but loving” by his son Wayne Gipp. Mr. Gipp died on Monday, July 31, 2017. He was 97.

Bonnie Rae Thomas Foster of Sugarloaf Shores, Florida — known locally for her artistic talents — died on Tuesday, Aug. 1, 2017. She was 75.

“Bonnie’s singular passion in life as a devoted wife, mother, and grandmother was the care and wellbeing of her family. All else was secondary,” her family wrote in a tribute.
