Joan Patricia Niecey
GUILDERLAND — Joan Patricia (née Vincent) Niecey, a church-going woman who had a 43-year career with the Department of Motor Vehicles, died on Monday, Aug. 28, 2017, at Our Lady of Mercy in Guilderland where she had been a resident since June 2016.
“Joan was known for her wit and favorite sayings when you carried on conversations with her,” her family wrote in a tribute.
She was born on Nov. 23, 1939 at Albany Hospital, the daughter of Theresa (née Broderick) Vincent, and Charles Vincent. She graduated from Nott Terrace High School in Schenectady in June 1957 at a commencement ceremony held at Proctors.
After passing a Civil Service exam, she went to work for the New York State Department of Motor Vehicles. She worked for the department for 43 years, retiring in 2002 from the Motor Vehicle Unit located on Swan Street in Albany.
She married the love of her life, Peter Niecey, on April 26, 1969, at Union Presbyterian Church in Schenectady, with Rev. William Dent Jr. presiding. Joan and Peter made their home in Guilderland in 1972, and they shared 43 years of marriage. Their union ended only with his death on Oct. 27, 2012.
Mrs. Niecey was a member of the Hamilton Union Presbyterian Church in Guilderland. She and her husband were very active in the church and served as deacons for the church, as well as in other capacities.
Mrs. Niecey liked reading, collecting teddy bears, making visits to the Guilderland Public Library, talking on the phone, going to movies, watching TV, going to Crossgates Mall, and traveling extensively in the United States when her husband was alive. She was known for collecting refrigerator magnets from all the places she visited.

Joan Patricia (née Vincent) Niecey is survived by her nieces and their families, Dorothy and Edward Nyszczy of Broadalbin, New York and their son, Edward and their son, Edward and Mary Ellen and daughters of Stow, Ohio, Janet and Harvey Salzman of Windham, New Hampshire and their children, Miriam Conners of Hudson, New Hampshire, Rachel and Patrick Lessard of Nashua, New Hampshire, Michael Salzman of Milford, New Hampshire, Carol and Jeff Umbrell of Doylestown, Pennsylvania, and their sons Joseph Umbrell of Lancaster, Pennsylvania and Christopher Umbrell of Doylestown, Pennsylvania, Terri Nobleman of Charlestown, South Carolina and her daughter Victoria Flanders and Kelli and Vidal Rodriguez of Weston, Florida plus their sons Vidal Vincent and Francis Ronald Rodriguez.
She is also survived by several great nieces and nephews of whom she was fond and a sister-in-law, Marlene Vincent, of Brant Lake, New York.
Her brother, Ronnie Vincent, whom she loved and very much admired, died on June 3, 2013.
She and Barbara Carlin of Clifton Park “were friends and telephone buddies for over 50 years,” her family wrote.
Viewing will be at the Hamilton Union Presbyterian Church, 2291 Western Ave., in Guilderland from 1 to 2 p.m. on Saturday, Sept. 2. The church services will begin at 2 p.m. with Rev. Stewart E. Pattison officiating. Interment will be at Prospect Hill Cemetery in Guilderland.
