NEW SCOTLAND — Virginia Becker, a grandmother who liked to crochet, cook, and party, died peacefully at her New Scotland home on Saturday, Aug. 27, 2016. She was 81.

She was born on April 16, 1935 in Albany, the daughter of Elmer and Martha (née Tallman) Van Alstyne.

ALTAMONT — Ross J. Herzog “entered into eternal rest,” his family wrote, on Friday, Aug. 26, 2016. He was 30.

ALTAMONT — A Guilderland Republican who served as town attorney for two dozen years, Frank J. Williams Jr. died on Friday, Aug. 19, 2016, at St. Peter's Community Hospice Inn. He was 94.

GUILDERLAND — “I don’t think there are any gentler men than him,” said Linda M. Conklin Wolcott about her husband, Corporal Robert Lawrence Wolcott, who died on Tuesday, Aug. 23, 2016. He was 56.

After a 32-year career with the State Police, Gary Robert Van Allen left what he called the rat race for retirement to the summer house on Helderberg Lake that he had so much enjoyed when he was growing up.

He died unexpectedly on Sunday, Aug. 28, 2016. He was 72.

COLONIE — A lover of his family, his dogs, and his Harley, Charles “Chuck” J. Burchhardt  died doing something he enjoyed. He died on Saturday, Aug. 27, 2016, while riding his motorcycle on a charity run.

KNOX — James E. Gage Sr. died in a farmhouse on a road named for his family, on land that had been in his family since the early 1800s, where he — and several generations of Gages before him — had grown up.

Joseph P. Spadaro, a World War II veteran who worked as an electrician and enjoyed playing bingo, died Wednesday, Aug. 24, at his Saratoga Springs home with his family by his side. He was 96.

He was born on Sept. 21, 1919 in Knox, to Mary and Cyrus Spadaro.

NEW SCOTLAND — Glen D. Carl, who worked at the New Salem garage and was a familiar helper at the hamlet’s famous fair, died on Friday, Aug. 19, 2016, at his New Scotland home.

He was the son of the late Dewitt and Hazel Carl of New Salem.

Carol Farrow Dow, a devoted mother who raised her family while working as a school secretary, kept on running into her sixties, garnering a prize in the famed Freihofer’s Run.

Ms. Dow of Windham, Maine, formerly of West Berne, died peacefully surrounded by her family on Thursday, Aug. 18, 2016. She was 83.

ALTAMONT — Charles Robert Armstrong, a World War II veteran who volunteered as a firefighter, died on Monday, Aug. 22, 2016, at the Guilderland Center Nursing Home. He was 96.

ALTAMONT —  Norma L. Hadsell, a long-time village resident, died on Sunday, Aug. 21, 2016 at Albany Medical Center. She was 79.

She was born on April 14, 1937, the daughter of the late Norman and Helen (née Cook) Bell. She enjoyed long country rides, shopping, eating out, and garage sales.

WESTERLO — An accomplished and much respected scholar of international repute and a long-time professor of English at Siena College, Margaret Patterson Hannay was an active practitioner of her Christian faith. She died on Thursday, Aug. 11, 2016, after a four-year struggle with brain cancer. She was 71.

VOORHEESVILLE — Robert Samuel, a lover of nature and his teaching career in Voorheesville, died last Wednesday, Aug. 3, 2016. He was 69.

GUILDERLAND — Alfred E. “Butch” Watson, the owner of Star Tree Service, was a hard worker who loved his son, Brandon, and who brought his two little dogs with him everywhere, including to his jobs as a tree trimmer.
