ALTAMONT — An efficient and particular woman, Eileen Ruth McKenney put her family first, followed by her faith, friends, and community.

Kathleen “Kate” Grimm, a civic-minded woman who touched many lives, died peacefully, at her New York City home, on Tuesday, Feb. 17, 2015. She was 68.

Mark Grimm, of Guilderland, said his sister was his hero.

“What a great sense of duty she had,” he said. “She was a great leader, someone you always wanted to follow.”

HUNTERSLAND — A homemaker who sewed brightly-colored quilts and kept her cookie jar full for her grandchildren, Daisy May Schanz was a caring and social woman.

Her pies, which she gave to people on happy or sad occasions, were made from scratch with lard, and she knitted mittens and quilts by hand.

KNOX — Thomas R. Filkins, a gentle and friendly man who was a tank mechanic during World War II and a postal carrier for most of his career, relished the role of public servant.

GUILDERLAND — Betty R. Van Hoesen kept her hands busy with crafts and her heart filled with generosity. She died on Monday, Feb. 23, 2015. She was 88.

“She was always smiling, always happy,” said her son, Ron Wallace. “She would do anything for you. She was a very nice person.

VOORHEESVILLE — Roger Spencer had no blood relatives but he had a family of admirers, many of who knew him as the cowboy at the village laundry.

GUILDERLAND CENTER — Donna LaGrange, a woman known for always having a smile on her face, died on Thursday, Feb. 12, 2015, at her home. She was 50.

Ms. LaGrange was born in Cobleskill on Oct. 28, 1964, the daughter of James “Butch” and Gloria LaGrange.

She graduated from Guilderland High School in 1984.

SCHENECTADY — Michael Hayes, of lower Broadway in Schenectady, died on Sunday, Feb. 1, 2015. He was 57.

Mr. Hayes was born in Albany and attended the Berne-Knox-Westerlo schools. He moved to Schenectady, where he lived most of his adult life.

VOORHEESVILLE — Thomas P. Talbot, a loving husband and former head clerk with the state comptroller’s office, died on Saturday, Feb. 7, 2015. He was 86.

“We had a wonderful life,” said his wife, Phyllis Talbot. “He was a wonderful husband.”

WESTERLO — Jean Frances Britton was a resolute woman who took her family on camping trips with the same regularity and determination she used learning to negotiate the pedals of farm machinery and church organs.

VOORHEESVILLE — Cynthia M. McDermott was a musician, teacher, and artist who valued most her roles as wife, mother, and grandmother.  

She died on Friday, Feb. 6, 2015, after a courageous battle with pancreatic cancer. She was 78.

VOORHEESVILLE — A shy man who valued camaraderie, R. Scott Pease loved his wife, his children, and his grandchildren but also considered his friends at the local American Legion Post, gun club, and tavern his family, too.

Mr. Pease died on Thursday, Feb. 12, 2015, after a long illness. He was 52.

BERNE — Thoroughly dedicated to his family, Donald Emil Moser was happy to come home from his travels and be at baseball games to watch his son.

Mr. Moser died on Thursday, Feb. 12, 2015, at Ellis Hospital in Schenectady. He was 80.

Mr. Moser was born in Schenectady on May 2, 1934, to the late Emil and Teresa Moser.

WRIGHT — Agnes L. Gaige, who brightened every room with joy and laughter, died on Saturday, Feb. 7, 2015 at St. Peter’s Hospice Inn in Albany, after a brief terminal illness. She was 84.

Mrs. Gaige was born on Sept. 1, 1930, in the Bronx, the daughter of Katherine (née Buckenberger) and Alfred Holt.

ESPERANCE — When he was just 19, James A. Blyth Sr. built a home for the couple who raised him, launching a career in carpentry. He died on Wednesday, Jan. 14, with his family by his side, at Ellis Hospital in Schenectady after a long fight. He was 69.

He had lived on Junction Road in the town of Esperance, Schoharie County.
