GPL gets grant to celebrate 250th anniversary of the American Revolution
GUILDERLAND — The public library here had received a $1,000 grant from Albany County USA-250 Commission.
The money will be spent on “a more robust and up-to-date American Revolution collection, descriptive and educational displays, and programming that brings further awareness and education to the community,” according to a release from the commission.
The library has titled its program “Guilderland Gets Historical! Guilderland Public Library Celebrates the 250th Anniversary of American Revolution.”
“Commemorating America’s founding next year will surely be an event to remember, which is why it is equally important to recognize the role Albany County played during this historic time period,” said Legislator Jeff Perlee, who chairs the Albany County USA-250 Commission, in the release.
These four other grants were also awarded:
— $1,500 for Woman's Club of Albany, which will hire Maeve Kane, a University at Albany historian, to speak on the contributions of women and Indigenous people to the American Revolution;
— $4,390 for City of Cohoes: Drums Along the Mohawk in which art students from the Cohoes School District along with local independent artists will work with business owners to design and create artwork that will commemorate America’s 250th Anniversary;
— $5,000 for Shaker Heritage Society: The Music of Ann Lee — a musical performance featuring the work of composer Kevin Siegfried to mark the semi-quincentennial of both the nation's founding, and the founding of America’s first Shaker village; and
— $5,000 for Siena University Theater: To Be Absolutely Free, which will provide an immersive theatrical encounter with the Capital Region of 1776, with performances at Mabee Farm and the Shaker Heritage Site in May of 2026.
“In order to understand where we are as a nation, and where we are going in the future, we have to recognize and remind ourselves where we have come from. I applaud the commission for its diligence and commitment for finding projects that commemorate and celebrate Albany County's place in our country's history,” said Albany County Legislature Chairwoman Joanne Cunningham in the release.
