Dr. Dearstyne to speak at Helderberg Lutheran. Join in the fun of learning about the anti-rent movement.

To the Editor:

It was a delight to read the article in The Enterprise of Dec. 2, announcing the placement of St. Paul Evangelical Lutheran Church, 1728 Helderberg Trail in Berne, onto the National Historic Register! We at the church are, indeed, honored to be on both the New York State and National Registers of Historic Places.

I would like to clarify that St. Paul is now named Helderberg Evangelical Lutheran Church. St. John in East Berne and St. Paul in Berne consolidated six years ago and took a completely new name. Helderberg Lutheran worships in the former St. Paul’s sanctuary at 1728 Helderberg Trail in Berne. The state and national historical registry offices both required that the historical name, not the current name, of the church be used.

Also, anyone interested in learning more about the anti-rent movement that held its convention in St. Paul Lutheran in 1845 is invited to hear Dr. Bruce and Susan Dearstyne speak at Helderberg Lutheran Church on Sunday, Feb. 5, 2017. Worship (Dr. Dearstyne will preach) is at 10 a.m., followed by a potluck lunch, and the Dearstynes’ presentation at about 12:15 p.m.

Dr. Dearstyne has done extensive research in New York State history and is an animated speaker. The public is welcome to join in a fun time of learning!
