SHOT WHEN MISTAKEN FOR DEER

Word was received at Albany from Little Falls on Monday that a fatal shooting accident had brought to an end a hunting party made up mostly of Albany county residents. The victim was M. L. Hawley of Ilion, another person to sacrifice his life to the toll of the Adirondacks deer hunting season through the carelessness of a companion hunter who, because he saw something move, thought that Hawley was a deer and shot him.

The accident occurred Saturday morning about 9 o’clock. Hawley, with several others, was hunting about four miles back of Canada Lake in a swamp. The party was making a drive and Hawley and a companion, Henry Gaulie of Voorheesville, were standing near together awaiting the onrush of the animal, when suddenly Geulie heard Hawley shout, “Oh, my God, I am shot!” and with that Hawley fell into Geulie’s arms, there being only a few inches between the men.

The rest of the party was summoned, and it was learned that Raymond H. Hoe of Guilderland, another member of the party, had seen something move and had fired. Hawley was shot in the right arm, the brachial artery being severed. First aid was quickly given the injured man, a litter was made and a trail blazed through the four miles to the highway and, from there, taken by auto to the hospital in Little Falls.

It was nearly 4 o’clock when the hospital was reached, and while Hawley was weakened from the great loss of blood, it was thought he would recover. His family was summoned, and Mrs. Hawley was taken to Little Falls by a neighbor. When she left his bedside conditions looked favorable, but about 9:30 p.m. word was received of his death which was caused by cardiac embolism caused from the wound.

FEURA BUSH — SOUTH END.

Now that election is over that the same old nominees of the same old party elected in the same old way, it remains to be seen whether their re-election promises are the same old kind or different. Our section is still suffering the same old kinds of roads, despite all former promises of town officials, but where there is life there is hope.
