Helderberg Haven to close unless two more seniors participate

To the Editor:

The Helderberg Haven Social Model Adult Day Program is slated to close for lack of participation.  Senior Services of Albany runs this program.

It has been active since September 2014.  The reason for closure is the program needs six guests daily and we only have four; so, if we can get two more guests, this valuable program will keep going.

The Adult Social day program is for seniors aged 60 and over who are physically frail or cognitively impaired and in need of some assistance with activities of daily living.  These programs are designed to give caregivers a much needed break from the 24-hour caregiver role.

Grants may be available for eligible seniors.

At Helderberg Haven we play games, listen to music, talk and socialize, learn new things, and generally have a real fun time.  I started volunteering with the Helderberg Haven group because I heard how much fun they were having in the back of the senior center.

If you know of anybody who could  benefit from what Helderberg Haven has to offer, you may contact me, Linda Hodges, at (518) 872-0940, or Beth Owens at (518) 694-3511 for more information.  Please help this program keep going.

Linda Hodges, chairwoman

Helderberg Senior Services

Editor’s note: If nothing changes, Helderberg Haven’s last day is Nov. 4, said Linda Hodges. The senior center is located at 1360 Helderberg Trail (Route 443) in Berne. The senior congregate lunch program at that site will not be affected if Helderberg Haven closes, Hodges said.
