‘A republic — if we can keep it’

To the Editor:
Kudos to Guilderland resident and historian John B. Haluska for his recent articulate words [“We almost lost our republic on January 6th,” The Altamont Enterprise, letter to the editor, July 28, 2022].

Mr. Haluska publicly called on local Republicans and Conservatives — if they are true patriots and advocates of Constitutional government — to unequivocally separate themselves from the violence of the January 6th insurrectionists.

In another immortal observation on the subject, following the long work of the Constitutional Convention in 1787, Founding Father Ben Franklin was asked “Doctor, what have we got? A republic or a monarchy?” Franklin responded, “A republic — if we can keep it.”

Mr. Haluska’s current admonishments directly follow in Franklin’s footsteps.
