Beautifying Berne a group effort

To the Editor:

As a follow-up to the letter submitted by Karen Schimmer last week regarding the recent plantings in Berne, I would like to express my appreciation for those who have helped make this possible.

First, thanks to Guernsey’s Nursery in Schoharie that not only gave us the best price for the plantings, but also greatly reduced their usual price for delivery and installation to meet the budgetary limits we were given. We are fortunate to have such a fine local resource.

Thanks also to Karen who assisted me in clearing the area in preparation for the day of planting and was there to supervise the operation.

Once the trees and shrubs were in, I faced the daunting task of how to provide them with the recommended 65 gallons of water weekly in an area far removed from any water source in a summer that was providing hot sunny days and little rainfall. Thankfully, the town was right there to help.

Town Supervisor Kevin Crosier was able to secure a water tank that was placed nearby to make the job of watering easier. And a special thanks goes out to Berne town employee Scott Green who, assisted by the group of summer youth employees, graciously added the task of watering the plants to his already overflowing list of duties.

It truly has been a community pulling together to help beautify the town.
