Peruse ‘The Helderberg Housewife’. Visit our rooms of history on Memorial Day

To the Editor:

During Berne's Memorial Day parade on May 30, the Berne Historical Society will open the Berne Museum for its 46th year.

Visit the rooms of history, enjoy some refreshments, peruse our yearbook collection.

It was in the yearbooks that a school club known as the Uhai Yorkers came to light. Advisors for the youth group included Joseph P. Foley and Ruth Winne Roberts.

Under their direction, a cookbook of sorts was born. "The Helderberg Housewife being a Compendium of Useful Information..." was published in 1967. The Berne library owns copy number 426 of a limited edition of 1,000 and is classified as reference material. In fact, this same book is found in the reference section of many of the surrounding libraries.

Were you a Yorker? Do you remember the Uhai Yorkers? Do you have one of these limited edition copies? Inquiring minds want to know. If you were a Yorker and can share some memories of the experience, we would enjoy hearing about it, write us at: Berne Historical Society, Post Office Box 34, Berne, New York 12023.

"The Helderberg Housewife..." a unique find full of recipes, remedies, and other useful hints is well worth the effort to take a peak. A copy will be on display at the museum during our opening on May 30. Pop on by the Berne Museum  between 8:45 and 11:45a.m. on Monday May 30 and soak up a bit of history.
