Learn the unique history of the Ulysses S. Grant Cottage

To the Editor:

Mark Hansen of Delmar is a tour guide at the Ulysses S. Grant Cottage National Landmark and State Historic Site in Wilton, New York. For the past six years, Mark has taught visitors from all over the country about the life, and death, of one of the greatest Americans.

His presentation to the Clarksville Historical Society will focus on the unique history of Grant Cottage and Mount McGregor, what led Grant to come to a mountaintop in the foothills of the Adirondacks at the end of his days, and why people have come to visit the site for 140 years.

Mark is a lifelong student of history, particularly relating to United States presidents and the Civil War.

Prior to being a guide, Mark worked for 32 years in the New York State Legislature before retiring. He also works as a customer-service representative at the Bethlehem YMCA.

The program will be held on June 4 at 7 p.m. at the Clarksville Community Church, 1997 Delaware Turnpike, Clarksville, NY 12041.  A brief annual meeting will precede the program.
