We are pleased to hear that Westerlo has a doctor once more. Hope he and his wife will like it as it is a fine location for a good doctor.
VOORHEESVILLE
Work will soon begin in the laying of crushed stone on the streets of the village, after which the roads will be oiled.
DELANSON
— Ernest Baker met with quite a bad accident on Wednesday afternoon while watching ball practice, when a bat slipped out of the hands of a batter, the end striking Mr. Baker over the right eye. Dr. Dugan was obliged to take several stitches in dressing the wound.
BERNE
— The school in District No. 14 closed on Tuesday, May 22nd, with an auto ride and picnic.
— Several from this place attended the Big 101 Ranch WIld West show in Albany on Monday.
VILLAGE NOTES
— The stores of Altamont, the First National bank, and other business places of this village will close on Saturday, May 30th, in observance of Memorial day. The Barclay Post, G. A. R., with Boy Scouts, will visit the cemeteries and decorate the graves of comrades. Contributions of flowers are requested, and they can be left at the Pangburn Bros. store early Saturday morning.
— Donald Sturges received merit badges for safety first and first aid, at the recent meeting of the Court of Honor (Boy Scouts) held at the Albany High school. James Pino received badges for first aid and public health.
— Dr. Frank H. Hurst of Guilderland Center has been commissioned a lieutenant colonel in the Army Medical Corps Reserve, and ordered to the Army Medical Field Service school at Carlisle Barracks, Pa., July 5th to 9th inclusive. After that date he will revert to inactive status.
— At the spelling contest held last Friday at the Altamont High school, Luther Secor Jr., Marion Chesebrough and Henrietta Whipple were the winners. Miss Chesebrough and Miss Whipple will compete in the contest for the third supervisory district of Albany county, to be held at the court house in Albany county to-morrow. Luther Secor is entitled to participate in this contest, but has declined the privilege. As a result of the contests in the supervisory districts of the county, six contestants will be chosen from each district to enter a county spelling contest to be held at the Milne High school in the near future. This contest will decide who is to be the lucky boy or girl to attend the New York State fair in September and participate in the statewide spelling contest.
— The Altamont Girl Scout troop were overwhelmed with joy at the annual field day in Washington park, Albany, last Saturday, when it was announced that Altamont had won the silver cup for the year. This cup is given for the troop which has the highest percentage of points for the year. The points include rank, recruiting, church attendance, scholarship, community service, and merit badges.
— About twenty laborers, mostly foreigners, quit work on the state road improvement on the Altamont hill today, as a result of the refusal of the contractors, Frissell & Snyder, to grant an increase in pay. They left Altamont on the noon train.
— Smith Spaulding, better known to his many friends as “Gyp,” shot himself early Friday morning. Despondency is generally believed to be the cause of the action. Mr. Spaulding was 73 years of age. He will long be remembered as one of the best blacksmiths in this section.
