Knox fire set by child in ‘timeout’
KNOX — A 10-year-old in Knox has been charged with two felonies after he lit his bedroom on fire on Friday, police say.
A 9-1-1 call was made by a resident at 8 Filkins Ln. on May 4 at 12:08 p.m. after they saw smoke and flames coming from the child’s bedroom, said Albany County Sheriff’s Investigator J.T. Campbell. Police are not releasing his name.
The 10-year-old was arrested and charged with second-degree arson and second-degree criminal mischief, both felonies. His charges are being handled by Albany County Family Court, where he appeared this morning.
“He was in his bedroom being disciplined,” explained Campbell, saying that the child had been given a “timeout” in his bedroom before he started the fire. A resident of the home removed the boy from his room after the fire was started, said Campbell.
Knox, Berne, and New Salem’s fire departments all responded to the scene, as well as the sheriff’s office and its emergency medical services, and Helderberg Ambulance. Campbell said the fire was contained to the bedroom and extinguished within minutes. There were no injuries, and minimal damage was done to the home. All first responders left the scene by 3:36 p.m., said Campbell.
Knox Volunteer Fire Company Chief Bill Vinson said that furniture and other items like a dresser and television were burned in the fire.
“It was a good knockdown, a good save,” he said. He said that it took about 15 minutes to put out the fire.
The property at 8 Filkins Ln. is listed as belonging to Ronald E. Thompson, and has a full market value of $108,448.
