Red Cross offers help to families after a member has died of COVID-19
ALBANY COUNTY — Another Albany County resident — a man in his fifties with underlying health conditions — died on Saturday of COVID-19, bringing the county’s death toll to 47.
As of Sunday morning, the county has 1,199 confirmed cases of coronavirus disease 2019 with 1,091 residents under mandatory quarantine and 10 under precautionary quarantine.
So far, 2,589 residents have come out for quarantine with 616 of them having tested positive and recovered. Thirty residents are hospitalized with the disease andeight of those are intensive-care units.
At his Sunday briefing, Albany County Executive Daniel McCoy highlighted the work being done by the American Red Cross, providing emotional and spiritual support to families who have had a member die of COVID-19.
The Albany Red Cross, he said, will help with funeral arrangements and legal issues related to custody, estates, and immigration. Those in need of help may call 585-957-8187.
The virtual Family Assistance Center, as the Red Cross calls it, will link families to crisis counselors who will provide emotional and spiritual support, as well as information and referrals to help them navigate the challenging process they might be facing after a family member has died.
“These families are dealing with the emotional trauma of losing a loved one, while facing logistical challenges caused by this public health emergency,” said Tara Hughes, Northeast Division Disaster Mental Health Advisor, in a notice from the Red Cross. Hughes will be leading the virtual COVID-19 Family Assistance Center program.
“We’re proud to use the mass-casualty experience of the Red Cross to join our community together and provide comfort and support to these families across New York State during these difficult times,” she said.
A team of 30 specially trained Red Cross Disaster Mental Health, Disaster Spiritual Care, and Health Services volunteers will be available to support families with their emotional and spiritual needs, as well as provide information and referrals to state and local agencies as well as other community organizations to help families meet their immediate needs.
This may include challenges with moving the body of their family member through systems that may be overwhelmed and have a different process than normal; legal resources for estate, custody, immigration, or other issues related to the death of their family member; and information on how to obtain travel services.
All Family Assistance Center support will be provided virtually and is completely confidential.
Families may fill out an online intake form, and a Family Assistance Center volunteer will contact them:

— In Spanish: www.redcross.org/NYSCOVIDApoyoFamiliar
Intake forms may also be filled out by a friend who thinks someone needs help, or an agency working on behalf of a family. The Family Assistance Center is expected to operate for as long as families will benefit from the service.
The Red Cross is also coordinating with the United States Food and Drug Administration and blood industry partners to collect plasma from individuals who are fully recovered from COVID-19 to help with treatment for the most seriously ill patients.
