JACOB HALLENBECK FOUND
DEAD NEAR HOME

Jacob Hallenbeck, farmer of New Salem, missing for a week, was found within a half-a-mile of his home, while the county had been searched for miles around in vain during the seven days that passed, without any clue to his whereabouts being found.

The body was discovered by Milton Hane of New Scotland avenue, Albany, a grandson of the aged farmer, in an undergrowth over a partly wooded ledge of rocks. It appeared that Mr. Hallenbeck had tried to make a short cut for home after his walk of the previous Sunday, had fallen on the ledge and been rendered unconscious. The bitter cold of Sunday morning also may have had something to do with his death.

The searching parties must have gone very near his body earlier in the week but it was somewhat hidden and missed the eyes of the searchers.

His funeral was held on Tuesday, from the home of his daughter in Albany. Mr. Hallenbeck was 80 years of age.

DELANSON

Wendell Wilber is having his yard on his place on Main street filled in at the front. When the new concrete sidewalk was laid, it was raised considerably along his lot, which made it necessary to fill in.

VILLAGE NOTES

— The annual school meeting of the Altamont school district will be held in the High school building next Tuesday evening, May 5th, at 7:30, standard time. The budget of expenses for the next school year, beginning August 1st, amounts to $15,955. Estimated receipts from public money and other sources amount to $6,000, leaving the amount to be raised by tax $9,955. Every resident and taxpayer of our school should consider it his duty to attend the meeting next Tuesday night.

— The annual Clean-up campaign has been carried out in Altamont this week. Following the request of the village health officer that residents clean up their yards and deposit their junk by the roadside to be carted to the village dump, such a collection as has never been seen before was brought forth on the first three days of the week. We had no idea that Altamont’s back yards harbored such a large quantity of rubbish. What a mess our properties would be if it were not for the annual clean-up! This springtime cleaning has come to be a permanent event in our village, and it is a good thing to have. But let us make every week “Clean-up Week” instead of concentrating our efforts all in one week. This year’s collection required ten trips of a large truck from the village to the dumping grounds.

HIGH SCHOOL ENGLISH
CLASS ENTERTAINED

Miss Dorothy Bilyieu entertained the members of her English class in the Albany High school at her home in Slingerlands on Saturday.
The class, numbering fifteen, including teacher Miss Marion Dodds as chaperone, hiked here in the morning, where they joined Miss Bilyieu. They continued their journey to the woods of Edward J. Slingerland, where a real good time was enjoyed. It included a frankfurter roast, which was served with salad, pickles, rolls, cake, toasted marshmallow, etc.

After partaking of the meal to which all did ample justice, a program of sports including base ball was carried out. At the end of the day’s festivities the party returned to their respective homes via the same method as they came — hiking.
