Not to have a bank in Altamont is disgraceful

To the Editor:

I was very surprised at the story that was in this week’s Enterprise regarding the closing of the bank [Feb. 21, 2019: “As customers move online, Altamont KeyBank will close”]. Nowhere was there anything about the impact it is going to have on the citizens of the village, the businesses, etc. that use the bank on a regular basis.

What about the people in the Hilltowns or seniors who don’t drive anymore? There wasn’t even a statement from the mayor in the article.

Now anyone who banks at KeyBank, including the village, is going to have to drive to Guilderland to transact business — how convenient. We aren’t interested in FDIC [Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation] statistics.

There has been a bank in this village for the 70-plus years that I have lived here and to not have one is disgraceful. I don’t consider SEFCU [State Employees’ Federal Credit Union] a bank.

KeyBank needs to be shown just what it is doing to our village.

Another question: What is going to happen to the building once the bank vacates in May. Will it just sit there empty?
