The last election was was about the very existence of our democracy
To the Editor:
In the presidential election of 1992, won by Democrat Bill Clinton against Republican incumbent George H. W. Bush, and Independent candidate Ross Perot, the winner of the election did not win a majority of popular votes.
The popular vote total cast against Clinton, and thus for either Bush or Perot, was more than 58,800,000, while Clinton won only 44,909,326.
In1860, Abraham Lincoln became the Great Emancipator, with only 39.7 percent of popular votes cast for president.
President Donald Trump, too, did not win a majority of votes cast by all registered voters. Trump only won 49.81 percent of the votes of Americans who cared enough to actually vote.
Remember, the election was about the very existence of our democracy, against the threat of “Hitler,” President Trump.
As much as some folks may revile the results of these elections, from Lincoln’s to Trump’s, that is how the United States Constitution works, and that is what our democracy looks like.
