Warren and Chuck made New Scotland a better place

Warren Schlickenrieder

Charles Carson

To the Editor:

The Kiwanis Club of New Scotland mourns the recent loss of two long-serving and beloved members of our club family. We want to take a moment to highlight some of the contributions of Charles Carson and Warren Schlickenrieder whose combined years of membership exceed 80. Both members demonstrated tremendous strength in character and were true examples of the great commitment Kiwanians make to serve their community.

Joining Kiwanis in 1985, Warren Schlickenrieder was our club president from 1995 to 1996. As president, he led the club to organize the creation of the Builders Club at the Voorheesville Middle School. Warren also served as our club’s vice president, secretary, and as a board member. At the division level, he held the positions of secretary and interclub chairperson.

Warren had the honor of being the grand marshall of the Voorheesville Memorial Day parade. He also volunteered with our club’s barbecue fundraisers and cemetery clean-ups as well as the youth sports program. Warren was a very sharp intelligent man, and enjoyed the weekly puzzles that were in the club’s newsletters; sometimes he was the only one who got the answer right!

Joining Kiwanis in 1965, Charles “Chuck” Carson served the club in 1971-1972 as the New Scotland Kiwanis president. As president, he organized the Punkintown Fair parking project for our club as well as organized our first Kiwanis Golf Day and Monte Carlo Night as fundraisers. Chuck also served as our club’s vice president, secretary, and as a board member.

He helped the club sell wreaths and the big coloring books at Stonewell Plaza. He volunteered with the club to maintain the Mt. Pleasant Cemetery, picked corn at LeVie’s farm, sold light bulbs and Christmas ornaments, and helped start the idea of the club having a chicken barbecue for a fundraiser. One thing that club members remember fondly about Charlie is that he hated chicken! We remember Chuck for many things, but especially for always being there and putting his heart and soul into the club.

We celebrate these contributions in our Kiwanis family and thank their families for sharing their loved ones with the club for so many years. The New Scotland community was truly made a better place by the great service given to it by Charles Carson and Warren Schlickenrieder. Members of the New Scotland Kiwanis Club sorely miss them and will continue serving our community in their memory.
