To the Editor:

The Kiwanis Club of the Helderbergs is reviving the Warner’s Lake Ice Out Challenge this year to raise money for Berne-Knox-Westerlo school students.

Recent publicity about the high poverty rate in the school district brought to light the need to supplement student expenses for basic necessities including meals, clothing, and school supplies, as well as funds for school field trips, college-application fees, and other miscellaneous items.

How will the ice challenge work? Anyone can submit any number of guesses for the date and time the ice will melt enough so at least one leg of the ice-out tripod will sink up to its halfway mark.

During January, chances will cost $1; during February, chances will cost $2.  During March, chances will cost $3.  The last chance to place bets is March 18.

Chance forms and collection jars will be placed at various Hilltown businesses. When the ice melts, half of the funds raised will go to the support fund for BKW students. The winning chance (or chances) will receive the other half.

Try your luck, patronize our local businesses, and contribute to a worthy cause!

Many thanks to Chris and Amanda Smith of Maple on the Lake for hosting this event at Warner’s Lake.
