Bring Complete Streets concept to the hinterlands

To the Editor:

In the past few weeks, The Enterprise has reported that the town of Bethlehem will move forward with its Complete Streets plan for the section of Delaware Avenue between Elsmere Avenue and the Normans Kill [“Little opposition as Bethlehem revives Complete Streets project,” June 10, 2025].

Having earned a master’s degree in urban and regional planning back in the 1990s gives me some credibility on this issue, but really, each of us has credibility through our daily experiences.

And so, when my wife and I moved to Picard Road in Voorheesville last year, I quickly learned how dangerous it can be to simply leave my driveway, which is about 100 yards from a blind curve where the speed limit is 45 miles per hour (and vehicles often go much faster).

To be clear, the speed on Picard Road is too high, especially considering the prevalence of folks walking, jogging, or cycling on this stretch of roadway. I have reached out to Assemblymember Gabrilla Romero about this (and suggested a multi-use path along this stretch of roadway).

And in my opinion, as I drive around Albany County, it is clear that speed limits are a little too high in many places, and it might be time to reconsider speed limits. Let’s take the Complete Streets concept and bring it to the hinterlands where many of us would like to see safer roadways for everyone.

Contact Assemblymember Romero if you agree — this is how we get the ball rolling on creating the change that many of us would like to see in our community.
