Altamont Enterprise December 30, 1921
CENTRAL BRIDGE
Schools are all closed this week and our little village is alive with the mirth of the young people and children. Coasting and skating are the order of the day.
SOUTH BETHLEHEM
Rensselaer Smith has purchased a four passenger Lozier.
Building Boom Has Struck Altamont
After several years of inactivity in the erection of new residences in Altamont, owing to the high cost of all building materials caused by the world war, it is gratifying to note that four new houses are under construction and are in a fair way to be completed by April 1.
Millard Cowan has a two-story house in course of erection on South Prospect street, on the Altamont-Voorheesville state road. Frank Warner has his bungalow at the corner of Maple avenue and Western avenue well under way. Floyd H. Lewis has his new bungalow on Main street partially completed. A. J. Amaden has his Aladdin bungalow on Western avenue nearly completed. The Aladdin bungalows are reasonably priced buildings, but with all the modern conveniences they make ideal homes.
We anticipate that during the coming year many more people will see the advantages of owning a home in Altamont, and will build residences on the excellent lots which can be purchased.
NEW SALEM, SOUTH END
Miss Ida E. Smith has accepted a position in Lurie’s new store at Schenectady, in the cloak and suit department.
QUAKER STREET.
Quaker Street had a visit this week from chicken thieves, who broke into the hen house of James Cummings on Wednesday night and took about 18 fowls, and on Thursday during the day entered the chicken house of the Soule farm and removed about 25 game fowls. State troopers are on the hunt.
A BUSINESS CHANGE.
Alfred Van Wie of Delanson has purchased the meat and vegetable business of Ernest Wililamson, located on Maple avenue, Altamont, and will take possession on Feb. 1.
Mr. Van Wie has been running a general merchandise business and market under the firm name of Van Wie & Wilber at Delanson. The firm sold the general store to Max Wise a short time ago, and Mr. Wilber has now taken over the meat business. Mr. Van Wie becomes one of Altamont’s merchants, and his record in our neighboring village bespeaks success here.
BERNE
— While the Hill boys were coasting on Berne hill last Saturday, the sleigh got the better of them, and Dudley rode off between the bridge and barber shop, dropping about 15 feet into the creek. Although he was able to get out alone, he was severely injured about his head. He is slowly improving, and his complete recovery is looked for.
— Corporal Earl Mattice of West Point is spending a ten day leave with his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Ira Mattice.
SLINGERLANDS.
We received an anonymous communication in Wednesday evening’s mail, dated Slingerlands, N. Y. December 27, which was consigned to the waste basket. People too cowardly to sign their names to articles for publication should make an effort to employ their time more profitably. We are not engaged in the practice of throwing stones for individuals with fancied or real grievances.
