Stoic men, many of them soldiers, silently wept when a father spoke of his son being killed in action. He wept, too, and said later that the contribution to the Wounded Warriors Program hit home.

GUILDERLAND CENTER — Described by her daughter as “stern but loving,” Marie F. Shank was an immaculate housekeeper and a deeply religious woman.

She died on Monday, Nov. 4, 2013. She was 87.

GUILDERLAND — Howard O. Towle taught his two daughters the value of money and education — resources he lacked in his own childhood — while, through his hard work and compassion, he served as a model for generosity.

He died on Friday, Nov. 1, after a short illness.  He was 88.

A friend of mine knocked on our door and without waiting for an answer she opened the door and walked into the living room. Gayle had her Ihone in her hand and was laughing heartily. It was not surprising to see the phone because it is always with her.

May I begin by referencing your editorial of Oct. 3, 2013, which began with a quotation by Margaret Mead: “ Never doubt that a small group of thoughtful committed citizens can change the world. Indeed, it’s the only thing that ever has.”

GUILDERLAND — Oops! The town of Guilderland’s Shredding Day took place on Nov. 3.

The worship schedule at St. John’s Lutheran Church at 140 Maple Ave., in Altamont on Sunday, Nov. 10,  is as follows:

— 8:30 a.m., informal worship with modern and ethnic hymns and a discussion of format for sermon;

— 11 a.m., traditional service, with traditional pipe organ;

GUILDERLAND — Victoria’s Secret, the largest American retailer of lingerie, has remodeled its shop at Crossgates Mall, which is now open on the upper level, across from Express.
