ALTAMONT — Carole Ann Lindell, a mother and grandmother who loved her family and her village home, died on Saturday, Sept. 6, at Riverside Nursing Home in Castleton following a long illness. She was 72.

Mrs. Lindell lived in the same house in Altamont for 40 years, and raised 10 children.

GUILDERLAND — Scott LoBaido travels the country painting American flags in tribute to those who protect his freedom.

This week, he painted a three-dimensional mural on the brick wall of Town ‘N’ Country Lanes, on Western Avenue, to honor Major General Harold J. Greene, who was shot and killed in Afghanistan in August.

GUILDERLAND — Several years ago, Guilderhaven Inc. took under its wing (pun intended) Joyce Perry’s wildlife rehabilitation program. We like its educational aspect and the caring and compassionate work that it does.

GUILDERLAND — The Guilderland Historical Society’s autumn program series begins on Thursday, Sept. 18, with Guilderland Town Justice Denise Randall presenting a program describing the workings of our town justice system and the challenges facing towns and their justices today.

Great thanks must be extended to the memory and spirits of Emma Treadwell and John Boyd Thacher. Their initial philanthropic gift of the place known as “Indian Ladder; inspired many other succeeding individuals and groups to dedicate their time and efforts to the growth of our John Boyd Thacher State Park.

When you hear a reporter talking about Congress and immigration what comes to your mind? My first thought is the story I have told before about the family from Poland that St. Lucy’s Church sponsored to come to the United States.

To the Editor:

What's getting lost in all the conversations about Common Core, standardized testing, teacher evaluations, funding, and the power politics in the educational establishment is the real world in which the students will ultimately have to live.
