“This legislation levels the playing field for hotels and motels by collecting sales and occupancy tax on short-term rentals, addressing an estimated $550 million in lost local revenue over the past five years,” said the bill’s sponsors.

The acreage is located near the intersection of Pine Lane and Rapp Road in Albany, and backs on to the side of Crossgates containing Macy's, Regal Cinema, Best Buy.

The May 17 petition filed by Cuyler Court residents William and Colleen Anders claims that, in July 2023, the town’s use of heavy equipment to access “stormwater or water management facilities” caused damage to their driveway and yard, which when combined with Guilderland’s “negligence and failure to maintain certain components” of those facilities, led to “significant flooding” of the Anders’ basement six months later.

The legal decision is the fifth in four years to uphold the town’s approval process of what was initially a three-site development proposal from Pyramid for over 200 apartments and townhomes; a 160,000-square-foot warehouse-price club; and only recently, a $55 million 120,000-square-foot regional cancer center.

Superintendent Marie Wiles says the hope is the added funds will increase the number of places available so that families who were disappointed in lottery results may still have a chance of their children attending. “This is a game changer for our partners,” she said of the preschools the district works with, “and for our community.”

On Sunday and Monday, June 2 and 3, Guilderland’s Hanna Mitchell and Jane Fanning competed in the New York State Public High School Athletic Association’s girls’ golf competition at The Edison Club in Rexford. They were part of Section 2 state championship team.

Last Thursday and Friday, May 30 and 31, track athletes from Berne-Knox-Westerlo, Guilderland, and Voorheesville took to the track at Guilderland High School in hopes to compete at the state competition this coming weekend in Syracuse.

Thelma I. Elgie

ALTAMONT — Thelma I. Elgie, longtime resident of Altamont, died peacefully on Thursday, May 30, in Albany with her loving family by her side. She was 102.

Born in 1922, she was the daughter of the late George and Hattie Spawn Gade. She was the beloved wife of the late Augustus “Jim” Elgie Jr. who died in 1956.

During a May 7 meeting Altamont Mayor Kerry Dineen said, “We got four letters about this subject because … in one area where I thought the leash law was a leash law — personally, I always thought that — we actually don’t have it, a  leash is not necessarily required on dogs outside of private property.”
