Vera Brooks, a life member of the Westmere Fire Department Ladies’ Auxiliary, celebrated her 106th birthday on Oct. 4.

Robert Bareis Sr., founder of Altamont Spray Welding, was a devoted family man. He died peacefully, surrounded by his family on Wednesday, Oct. 2, 2019, at the Albany County Nursing Home. He was 83 years old.

Keegan Bailey of Altamont, for his Eagle Scout project, spearheaded the construction and installation of two large picnic tables on the grounds of the Duanesburg YMCA facility in Delanson.

Bailey, 15, a student at Tech Valley High School, is a member of Altamont’s Boy Scout Troop 264.

The cases against Richard Sherwood and Thomas Lagan — following their arrests in February 2018 — are closing, with the first sentencing, of Lagan, in county court this week. He still needs to be sentenced in federal court, in December. Sherwood will be sentenced in county and federal court in December. 

On Saturday, Guilderland’s soccer teams held their Senior Day to honor players in their final year of the soccer program. The girls were first up on the pitch, playing against Shaker. The score went back and forth, taking the game into overtime — but ending in a tie: 2 to 2.

“Everyone I’ve spoken with says that it’s just one of the best corn mazes in the area,” FMS principal Michael Laster said of Liberty Ridge, which boasts a 100-acre corn maze for kids to explore. Liberty Ridge was also forced by the state and the courts several years ago to let all couples, including same-sex couples, who wanted to, to hold their weddings there.
