Guilderland

GUILDERLAND — One in 10 people in Guilderland is food insecure, according to a press release from the Guilderland Chamber of Commerce. The suburban town has a population of roughly 36,000.

Asked why Guilderland was eager to change now when earlier administrations had been unwilling, Superintendent Marie Wiles said, “We’re at a watershed moment in our country. George Floyd and what happened to him just woke people up. Great numbers are starting to see there really is systemic racism that we haven’t been really appreciative of.” She also said, “We’ve got the trifecta,” and referenced the coronavirus pandemic, economic uncertainty, and social unrest. “Maybe that’s what it takes to wake us up,” said Wiles.

GUILDERLAND — With the start of summer, Guilderhaven wants to remind all pet owners that, when it seems warm to us, it feels even warmer to our furry, four-legged friends. When out walking, they are also closer to the ground, receiving more reflected heat from sidewalks and pavement.

To make way for a new Stewart's shop, the Victorian two-family home at 107-109 Helderberg Ave. was torn down this week.

Guilderland school leaders spoke of the grit that was developed by earlier generations that survived the Great Depression and fought in World War II, and urged the Class of 2020, having endured the coronavirus pandemic, to grow from it.
