A day after Guilderland High School was locked down because of a second bomb threat inside of a week, Guilderland Police arrested two students on felony charges.

For the first time, Guilderland used a survey to gauge public opinion in drafting its budget; 370 surveys were completed.

Members of the Guilderland School Board, elected representatives of the people, should have discussed the naming of the high school football field in public as the law allows.

While parents and speech therapists told the school board about the feared consequences of cutting a part-time post, the superintendent says student needs wil still be met.

The school district wants to "work smart," the superintendent said, exploring only the best ideas to help with the problems of declining enrollment, stagnant funds, and under-used buildings.

ALBANY — Brenda McClaine agreed to a plea deal Tuesday for one count of third-degree grand larceny, a felony, that will put her in jail for six months and on probation for five years. She is to be sentenced on Oct. 28.

Had McClaine gone to trial instead, she could have served a maximum of two-and-a-third to seven years.

Before the roar that reached the rafters, before the caps of red and white were tossed with abandon and fell to the floor, before the beach balls surfed the crowd — there was Pomp and Circumstance, there were parents taking pictures, there were carefully chosen words spoken from the heart.

The school superintendent has re-assigned a teacher suspected of embezzling union funds to work on curriculum in the district office so as not to disrupt student learning during the investigation.

GUILDERLAND — “Hard choices” was the phrase most frequently repeated last Thursday night as the Guilderland superintendent presented her $91.5 million spending plan for next year. The phrase was uttered by administrators and school board members alike.

Faced with reduced resources and a government reform agenda, Superintendent Marie Wiles wants school leaders, rather than outside pressures, to define Guilderland's future.
