Speakers before the Albany County Legislature were about evenly divided as business owners and leaders of financially strapped not-for-profits opposed the bill while religious leaders and workers spoke in favor of it.

ALBANY — “There was a weird noise coming from the chipper,” said tree climber Brendon John Andres, crying on the witness stand last week at an Occupational Safety and Health Administration hearing in Albany as he recalled the death over a year ago of  a co-worker.


Work schedules have been the main obstacle in an ongoing labor dispute.

The manager of Indian Ladder Farms says apple prices won’t increase because of new federal regulations for handling pesticides; the farm is already following most of the protocols.

“We created another position so he could stay. Otherwise, he would have been out of a job,” New Scotland Supervisor Doug LaGrange said of a change of posts for a town employee.

The middle- and working-class families among us may be forgoing the necessities of life to have a roof over their heads; we must build communities that allow for a mix of housing, affordable to all classes of natives and newcomers alike.
