This map is the first of its kind to visualize internet access at a household level across New York State, allowing for a more specific understanding of where service is most needed, and preventing unserved households from being masked by those that may be served around them. 

After a Knox resident complained about the town website at Knox’s December board meeting, The Enterprise spoke with Matthew Turcotte, a web designer who specializes in municipal websites, about what makes a town site good, and why they’re so hard to get right.

The two “network aggregation points,” which look like 10-by-12-foot buildings, 8 feet high, are proposed for Rensselaerville and Berne.

In order for a cable company to qualify for a grant to fund expanding its internet service in Westerlo, the town must go through a multi-step process to approve a contract before Aug. 15. But last week at a board meeting, town officials were wary of being locked into a contract.

In the rural Hilltowns, an area described as “unserved and underserved,” in terms of internet, service providers are looking to change this.

Some Rensselaerville residents are in the right place, with the right telephone company.

BERNE — Cars are parked alongside the town’s library even when the building is closed and its parking lot isn’t full. Its Wi-Fi signal is strongest there.
