The Berne-Knox-Westerlo School District held assemblies last week to address any questions or anxieties students may have about school shootings, from teaching how to respond to an active shooter to addressing mental health.

The school board discussed a number of options for students to learn outside the classroom.

“It’s something like ‘The Music Man’ to me,” said an audience member in response to a proposed  Junior Reserve Officer Training Corps, which a former Army officer said he received 32 signatures of interested students at Berne-Knox-Westerlo.

A proposed JROTC program at Berne-Knox-Westerlo Secondary School would depend on the feedback of the parents and students, as 10 percent of students must participate for federal funding.

Three local runners, two from Voorheesville and one from Berne-Knox-Westerlo, slogged through the mud and snow at the State Cross-Country competition at Wayne High School in Ontario Center in western New York Saturday, racing against the fastest runners in New York. Each ran on the 3.1 mile course.

BERNE — The Berne-Knox-Westerlo Secondary School is excited to announce the formation of a Future Farmers of America chapter. The FFA is an organization that provides agricultural, educational, and leadership opportunities for students and young adults across the country.

The Berne-Knox-Westerlo capital project was approved by a wide margin. The $20 million project will fund infrastructure, security, design, and technology improvements for the district’s two buildings, primarily for the elementary school.

The Berne-Knox-Westerlo Board of Education is putting up for a Nov. 2 vote two propositions for capital projects — for $15 million and $5 million. After a lengthy debate over whether the capital project was a “blank check” or a means of improving student education, three board members voted yes, one voted no, and one abstained.

At Berne-Knox-Westerlo, a new program will teach students the many aspects of agriculture, from water pH to horse care.
