To the Editor:

For every action, there is a reaction. For every reaction, a choice is presented. This letter to the editor is my expressed reaction to the article entitled “Complaints persist about racial slurs at BKW,” written by Marcello Iaia and featured in the Thursday, March 19, 2015 issue of the newspaper.

An often-large cast at Berne-Knox-Westerlo is performing the musical, about a Chicago teen who stirs up a small town with dancing, this weekend, starting at 7 p.m. on Friday.

“The lighting was perfect, my attitude was great, and the photographer suggested we submit the photos to ‘Playboy,’” said the Hilltown native and Playboy's Miss March.

BERNE — Three students were arrested for allegedly breaking into Berne-Knox-Westerlo’s secondary school early Saturday morning, costing the district several thousand dollars in damage and stolen items, according to the Albany County Sheriff’s Office.

Principal Mary Summermatter reportedly called the discouraged mother of a black student to find out more about the student's experiences with racial slurs and to suggest a schedule change.

School leaders can, and must, insist on outward signs of respect, and maybe inward changes will come. Maybe the taunting students will find their heart.

Amyah Trossbach, who has a black father and a white mother, said she commonly hears comments about her race from peers. Administrators have responded to her complaints, but she has had these exchanges throughout her one-and-a-half years at BKW.

Berne-Knox-Westerlo basketball players Monique Britton and Kathryn Salo have been recognized as Western Athletic Conference All Stars.

Unless Duanesburg, Schoharie, and Berne-Knox-Westerlo have budgets passed with money allocated for football, the Schoburg team may not exist next fall, said BKW's Interim Superintendent Joe Natale.

The Berne-Knox-Westerlo basketball team could have used more rebounds this season.
