Rising food prices are forcing people into poverty
To the Editor:
Food prices are rising, and they shouldn’t be. This is not a good thing, because rising prices usually aren't good for people in poverty, and the only reason is because the food industry wants more money.
Some people can’t afford the higher food prices. It is not good because the increasing food prices forced more than 44 million people into poverty.
I went to a grocery store and a little over five bags of food cost more than $100.. I really think it is selfish because the food industry doesn't even consider that people might not actually be able to keep up.
Because some people can’t afford the new stuff, they get angry about it. Rising food prices have actually led to riots.
My parents spend around $200 a week on food alone, so that is a good reason to get angry. We could've used that money doing stuff we wanted to do, like go to an amusement park or restaurant
I know there could be some counter arguments, saying the food industry needs more money to produce food more efficiently, but why don’t they just worry about making food cheaper so most people can afford it? The sad part is that their goal is to make money, not feed people.
Extreme hunger also leads to health problems. Hunger actually is the number-one health problem in the world, even over obesity and diabetes.
One time, my parents left to take my sister to the hospital emergency room because she had a concussion, and I was left home alone. I was young, so I didn’t know how to cook anything, and there was very little food that didn’t have to be cooked. After that night, I got sick because I hadn’t had any food.
That was only for one night. Imagine how bad it must be for people who don’t eat on a daily basis. I, as well as lots of people, would like to see prices go down, and I think we could fight for it and win.
