Stolen laptop leads to prison

GUILDERLAND — A 17-year-old, discovered with a laptop stolen from an unlocked car at Crossgates Mall in Guilderland, was sentenced on Tuesday to one to three years in state prison.

On Aug. 8, Maliem Murphy of Schenectady, had pleaded guilty to one count of fourth-degree criminal possession of stolen property, a felony.

He had been found, almost a year before, on Sept. 7, 2012, by an off-duty officer. The officer saw Murphy with a duffle bag behind a Dumpster at Crossgates and asked what he was doing, according to a release from the Albany County District Attorney’s Office; Murphy responded that he had just stolen the laptop computer.

Murphy was sentenced on Sept. 10 before Judge Stephen Herrick in Albany County Court.

Assistant District Attorney Matthew Hauf of the Major Offense Bureau handled the prosecution of this case.
