Paul A. Benson

ALTAMONT — Paul A. Benson, who grew up in Altamont, was an engineer who worked on the Apollo Lunar Project and loved the adventure of travel. He died on Thursday, May 5, 2016, at his home on Camano Island, Washington. He was 85.

He was born on June 27, 1930 to Eleanor and Floyd Benson and was a member of Altamont High School's Class of 1948. He married Kathryn Pangburn, daughter of Agnes and Harold Pangburn, and they moved to California in January 1957.

Mr. Benson was an engineer at the Garrett Corp. in Los Angeles and lent his talents to many projects, including the DC-9 and Boeing 737 airplanes, the Apollo Lunar Project, and the F-15.

Upon retirement in 1988, the Bensons moved to Friday Harbor, Washington and later to Camano Island, Washington. “Paul and Kay loved to travel and so they did — far and wide,” his family wrote in a tribute. “Planning for the next adventure started soon after the previous journey ended.”

Mr. Benson is survived by his wife, Kathryn Pangburn Benson of Camano Island, Washington; his son, Frederick P. Benson, M.D. and his wife, Jennifer, of Aptos, California; and his daughter, Deborah Lane, and her husband, Dean, of Lake Anna, Virginia. In addition, he is survived by eight grandchildren, and  three great-grandchildren, with two more to come this summer.

At his request, no services will be held.

Condolences may be sent to: 163 Glacier Peak Dr., Camano Island, Washington  98282.
