To the Editor.

I’m writing this letter not only to the editor, but to all your readers and especially to the residents of Westerlo. Monday night, I had the opportunity and pleasure to meet the candidates representing the Republican Party.

The entire night created a vivid memory in my mind that was still visible when I woke up the following morning. It was so compelling that I wanted to share it.

It was a beautiful summer night and we were warmly greeted and introduced to the candidates running for office in this November’s general election. They were polite, kind, and extremely approachable.

The meeting was held in the South Westerlo firehouse, which was a first for me and I could envision how awestruck many wide-eyed children would be just to stand beside these mighty trucks, right where I had the privilege of standing.

The meeting began with the pledge to the flag. Although I have said this pledge multiple times throughout my life, never have I experienced the feeling like I did at that moment.

We could have said the pledge outside, but a volunteer fireman got a small flag similar to the type used by kids to wave in a parade. This fireman held that flag so steady and with the backdrop of all the fire equipment, everyone recited the pledge.

At that moment, I felt such pride. I believe the simplicity of that moment, transported all of us present to the core of what America and democracy is all about.

I was equally proud of the Westerlo Volunteer Fire Company and the volunteers who put their lives on the line with each fire call. They receive no pay, but are quick to respond to the needs and safety of our community. They are there for us and our well being.

Looking at those trucks reminded me of those volunteers who, over the many years, have gone before us. It also made me extremely thankful for those who continue to follow in their footsteps by performing one of the most dangerous jobs in life. I felt honored to be in the midst of their presence — past and present.

The night for me was more than just a caucus that I was attending. It was an opportunity to observe and participate in genuine concerns and caring about our town.

It restored faith in my beliefs that these individuals were just going to do their best, and their best includes you and me and moving our town in a forward direction.

We laughed, we joked, we hugged, we talked, we listened, and, above all, we cared. I felt gratitude that these individuals have stepped up to the plate to give voters of our town a choice. Good Luck to each and every one of you.
