VOORHEESVILLE — Dr. Alan R. McCartney, Ed. D., a school leader, former football athlete and golfer who loved his grandchildren, died unexpectedly at home on Friday, May 8, 2015, after a brief illness. He was 67.

Born in Yonkers on July 30, 1947, he was the son of the late Alan J. and Marion (née Raymond) McCartney.

Dr. McCartney was the interim superintendent of the Ravena-Coeymans-Selkirk Central School District, a position he had held since 2012.  He previously served as superintendent of the Voorheesville Central School District for 16 years, retiring in 2005. Between his stints in local administration, he worked as a consultant for education architects Collins and Scoville, as a company representative with Atlantic Energy Solutions for school energy performance contracts, and as a computer software consultant with Viyya Technologies.

Dr. McCartney also served as superintendent of the Crown Point Central School District from 1982 to 1989, and as a middle school assistant principal at Mexico Academy and Central School District from 1979 to 1982.

Before that, Dr. McCartney was an adjunct professor at State University of New York at Plattsburgh, and a social studies and economics high school teacher at the Sackets Harbor Central School District. During that time, Dr. McCartney coached high school football and basketball.

Dr. McCartney held a doctor of education degree from Columbia University Teachers' College, a master's degree in education and a certificate of advanced studies from State University of New York College at Oswego, and a bachelor's degree from Thiel College in Pennsylvania. 

Dr. McCartney excelled in athletics at Thiel, playing football and wrestling. Later, he played semi-professional football for the Watertown Red & Black.  He enjoyed golf and was a member of the Pinehaven Country Club. 

“He loved the ocean and traveling, but his favorite thing to do was spend time with his grandchildren,” his family wrote in a tribute.

Dr. Alan R. McCartney is survived by his wife, Marcia; his daughter, Megan Bruno, and her husband, Sean, of Voorheesville; his son, Ryan Alan McCartney, and Katie Kennedy, of Wellington, Florida; his grandchildren, McKenzie, Sean Patrick, and Marion Bruno, and Mia McCartney; his brother, David McCartney and his wife, Dee, of Rochester, New York; his sister, Patricia Grassman, and her husband, Michael, of Coram, New York; and several nieces and nephews.

Calling hours were held on Wednesday, May 13, at the Applebee Funeral Home in Delmar. Private funeral services will be held at a later date.
