45 Capital Region BOCES students qualify for state SkillsUSA competition

Trista Smi, a Berne-Knox-Westerlo student, placed third for welding in the regional SkillsUSA competition and will now compete at the state contest.

A total of 450 Capital Region BOCES Career and Technical Education students competed in the regional SkillsUSA competition on March 18; forty-five won medals and will now compete in the state competition in Syracuse next month. Winners of that event will advance to the national competition in June.

Seven local medalists are listed here.

First Place:

— The team of Kyra Walker, Shenendehowa; Amelia Wronoski, Guilderland; and Makenzie Ryan, Watervliet for Crime Scene Investigation, Criminal Justice.

Second Place:

— Lilianna Hotaling, Berne-Knox-Westerlo, for cosmetology;

— Madison Coons, Guilderland for Advertising Design, Digital Media Design; and

— The team of Thea Avramidis, Cohoes; Rabia Khan, Watervliet; and Katherine Stapf, Voorheesville for Crime Scene Investigation.

Third Place:

— Trista Smi, Berne-Knox-Westerlo, for welding and metal fabrication;

— Logan McCabe, Guilderland, for carpentry, Building Trades; and

— Cody Bess, H,Voorheesville, for heavy equipment operations.

SkillsUSA is a career and technical student organization serving more than 395,000 high school students. The organization promotes personal and professional growth and offers students the opportunity to compete at the local, regional, state, and national levels.
