Many immigration violations are criminal

To the Editor:

I’m writing in response to the whistleblower kit article [“In wake of Good’s death, scores turn out at Guilderland library to make whistleblower kits,” The Altamont Enterprise, Jan. 13, 2026]

“This is because immigration violations are civil, not criminal, the attorney general’s guidance explains, so a judicial warrant is required.”

This sentence is misleading at best and completely inaccurate at worst. There are many immigration violations that are criminal.

Editor’s note: The point made in the state attorney general’s guidance is that a judicial warrant is required for local police to intervene with civil immigration violations.
